Never quilted? Learn to make a quilt by making a new block each month
with our Beginner's Block of the Month.
Block
#12 - London Roads
12½" unfinished |
This block has an empty space in the middle so you can sign and
date your quilt when you are finished.
You'll
need two colors which I'll call light and dark. The light is your
background fabric, so cut:
- One
4-1/2" square.
- Two
4-7/8" squares cut on the diagonal to make HST pieces.
- Eight
4-1/2" X 2" rectangles.
- One
5-1/4" square cut twice on the diagonal for QST pieces.
From
your dark fabric, cut:
- Four
4-1/2" X 1-1/2" rectangles.
- One
5-1/4" square cut twice on the diagonal for QST pieces.

|
|
Sew
the pieces together in the following order using ¼"
seams. Be careful of the bias when pressing! Now, sew the
small triangles together and press. (Do all 4 pieces at once...remember
chain stitching?)
|
 |
| Next,
match these 2 part triangles up with the light colored triangles
and sew. |
|
Finally,
sew your rectangles together as follows: One light, one dark,
and one light. Repeat three more times.
|
|
You
are now ready to put your block together. Place each piece
in the following order and sew:
|
Row
one:
|
Row
two:
|
Row
three:
|
 |
 |
 |
Sew each row together and, believe it or not, you're done!
Twelve months of different blocks which will make up your
first quilt! I've enclosed the final section, Finishing
The Quilt, so you can do just that. If you're like me,
there is no way you can wait another month to get the finishing
directions. Happy quilting! |
