- When
we are making triangles, we need to add 7/8" to the squares
to make them a little bigger which will compensate for the triangle.
|
So,
you will need to cut the dark fabric into two 4-7/8" squares
and the light fabric into two 4-7/8" squares. Cut each
of these squares in half diagonally.
|
|
- Place
a dark triangle and a light triangle RST and sew a 1/4"
seam across the long side of the triangle. Repeat with the other
3 triangles. Press each seam towards the dark side. Be careful
not to stretch the seam as this will warp the square. If you
are having a problem, forget about ironing for now and just
finger press the seam. If you warp the seam, you won't be able
to get it straight again. Trim the square to 4-1/2" if
necessary. If your square is a bit smaller than the needed size,
you might want to try using a scant 1/4" seam. (Just sew
it a hair smaller than 1/4"). Some people like to make
their triangles bigger on purpose so that they can trim it to
the size they need and not have to worry about it coming out
the wrong size. Try both ways to see which method you like better.

Row
1: Lay out 1 light square, one triangle square with the dark side
on the bottom left, then 1 more light square. Sew the seams and
press towards the light blocks.
|
 |
Row
2: Lay out 1 triangle square with the dark side to the bottom right,
the dark square, and another triangle with the dark side towards
the top left side. Sew and press towards the dark square.
|
 |
Row
3:Lay out 1 light square, 1 triangle with the dark side facing the
top right, then the last light square. Sew seam and press toward
the light squares.
|

|
Place row 1 and row 2 RST. Match seams and pin. Sew making sure
you are not cutting off the "points" of the triangles.
This means that you are not sewing the triangle square too far
away from the edge resulting in the 'point' side becoming a straight
side.
Place
row 2 and row 3 RST. Match up seams and pin. Sew making sure you
do not cut off the triangle points.
