Never quilted? Learn to make a quilt by making a new block each month with our Beginner's Block of the Month.
Block #3 - Shoo Fly
12-1/2" unfinished

This block takes our first two lessons, makes a few changes, and becomes a brand new square! Cut the following out of your dark and light colored fabrics.
  • Cut the light fabric into four 4½" squares.
  • Cut the dark fabric into one 4½" square.
  • Cut the light fabric into two 4 7/8" squares for our HSTs. (Half-square triangles)
  • Cut the dark fabric into two 4 7/8" squares for our HSTs.
Shoo Fly Square

Now that you're getting familiar with making your HST blocks, here's a shortcut method.
Place one light square and one dark square RST. Draw a line on the diagonal across the light colored fabric. It really doesn't matter what you use to draw the line...you will be cutting it apart anyway. Just be careful that whatever you use doesn't bleed into the fabric. Your favorite quilt store has many different products to use...or a pencil works too! Now sew a seam ¼" to the left of the line. Then, sew another ¼" seam to the right of the line. Cut your two triangles apart on the line, then press towards the dark side. Perfect triangles in half the time! Make the rest of the HST squares for a total of four.

Our next step is put it all together. For your first row, set out one HST with the dark side on the lower right side. Place a light block in the center, then another HST with the dark side on the lower left side this time. Sample of first row laid out before sewn together.

The second row is a light, dark then light square. Remember to sew ¼" seams. Press towards the dark square.
Sample of second row laid out before sewn together.

The final row is another HST with the dark side facing the upper right, a light block, then the final HST with the dark side facing upper left this time. Sample of third row laid out before sewn together.

Sew the three rows together to make your block. Remember to match your seams carefully. Pretty simple...right??? Don't forget to square up you block so it measures 12½'".

Are you experimenting with different colors? Feel free to make each block a different color, or different shades of the same color. Your imagination is the only thing stopping you now. Until next time...Happy quilting.
