Never quilted? Learn to make a quilt by making a new block each month with our Beginner's Block of the Month.
Block #6 - Four Patch Variation
12-1/2" unfinished

This month, we're going to learn a new term as well as a new type of block. Up until now, we have been making nine patches. This time, we're making a four patch. The difference is that the triangles are called QSTs (quarter square triangles) and we have to be careful that we cut them on the bias. You are also going to use 3 different colored fabrics. I will call them dark, medium, and light. Ready to cut? Here we go...

  • Cut two 7¼" squares from light fabric.
  • Cut one 7¼" square from dark fabric.
  • Cut one 7¼" square from medium fabric.

Now, place a dark square right side up on your cutting mat. Then, place a light square right side down on top of the dark fabric. Make sure you line up the edges carefully, then cut from corner to corner. Don't move the material! Now cut the material on the opposite diagonal. You should now have 4 sets of triangles. Repeat with the medium colored fabric. At this point, you don't take the material apart. Just sew your ¼" seam on one of the short sides of the triangles.

Be very careful when you iron the seams. Try not to touch the edges of the triangles or you might stretch the fabric out of shape. Remember, once the bias edge is stretched out of shape, it won't go back so you'll have to start over. If you don't feel comfortable with the iron, just finger press the seams flat.
Now, line up two triangles of the same color RST so that the colored parts are on opposite sides. Pin the center seam and sew together. Do the same for the other triangles and press. To make your first row, lay the square with the dark triangle facing top and bottom, then lay the medium triangle facing right to left next to it. The second row should be the opposite; a medium placed right to left, then a dark facing top to bottom. Carefully line up your seams and sew.

You can always make the blocks bigger and then trim them to size later. For a QST, you always need to add 1¼" to the finished size that you want. Always press the seams towards the darker color. Be careful to match your seams when sewing them. Don't forget to trim your block to 12½".

I hope your projects are going well for you. Next month, we're going to combine some more HSTs and QSTs for a great looking block. Until then...happy quilting.
