Never quilted? Learn to make a quilt by making a new block each month
with our Beginner's Block of the Month.
Block
#7 - Star Variation
12-1/2" unfinished This
month you'll again be working with three different colors. You'll
need to figure out where you want each color to be. If you are
going to copy mine, then just cut what I tell you to. If you want
to move the colors around, just cross off my color word and change
it to the one you want. I know this square looks really complicated,
but it's not. Remember that an HST needs to be cut 7/8" larger
than the block size you want, and a QST needs to be cut
1-1/4" larger than the block size you want.
|
Here
we go...
-
Cut one 4-1/2" square of dark fabric for the middle.
-
Cut two 4-7/8" squares of medium and two 4-7/8" squares
of dark for the HSTs.
-
Cut two 5-1/4" squares of light and two 5-1/4" squares
of dark for the QSTs.
|
 |
| Place
all of the squares that will be used for the triangles RST. Cut
your HSTs from corner to corner to make two triangles, then cut
the QSTs from corner to corner twice to make 4 triangles from each
square. |

The
HST triangles are the light fabric and the medium fabric, and
the QST triangles are the dark and light fabrics. Sew the HST
and QST triangles together. Don't forget to chain your pieces
together to speed up the work. (To chain, instead of cutting the
threads each time you sew a piece, start stitching the next piece
without cutting the threads in-between each triangle. You will
be forming one long continuous "chain" of all your little
triangles. Cut them apart before you iron them.) Finger press
the seams towards the darker fabrics, then press. |
|
For
your first row, line up and sew...
One HST with the light side facing lower right, a QST with the dark
triangles facing left and right, then another HST with the light
side facing lower left. |

Row 1 |
Your
second row is as follows:
One QST with the dark sides up and down, the solid dark square,
the another QST with the dark sides once again up and down. |

Row
2 |
Your
final row is as follows:
One HST with the light side facing upper right, a QST with the dark
sides facing left and right, and the final HST with the light side
facing upper left. |
 Row
3 |
When
sewing each row together, remember to pin the seams first so that
each block intersection lines up carefully. Press the rows the
way they naturally fall which is probably towards the center.
Sometimes when you sew a lot of pieces together, there forms a
bulky intersection that is hard to press the way you want it to
go. If this is the case with any of your work, simply clip the
seam on either side of the intersection just past the 1/4"
seam. Then press each seam the way it wants to go. Be careful
not to clip your seam line.

| That's
all for now. Next month, we'll learn to make a fun pattern called
a "Flying Geese" which we will use to create a new block.
Until then...happy quilting. |
