Never quilted? Learn to make a quilt by making a new block each month with our Beginner's Block of the Month.
Block #9 - Diamond in a Square
12-1/2" unfinished

This is really a very simple block, especially since you've become such a pro at making triangles. Once again, you'll need 3 different colors. You will need a background fabric and I'll just say light and dark for the other two.

Out of each of your light and dark fabrics, cut:

Two - 6½" x 6½" squares.

Out of your background fabric cut:

Eight - 3½" x 3½" squares.

Beginner Block 9

Remember the Flying Geese we did last month? You're about to do almost the same thing. Draw a diagonal line on all eight of the background pieces. Starting at the upper left-hand corner, place a 3½" square RST on the dark 6½" square so that the diagonal line goes from lower left to upper right. Sew on the diagonal line and trim both layers of fabric ¼ to a " seam. Be careful of the bias and match your corners carefully. Now, do the same thing to the opposite corner. Finger press the seams away from the center block.

Now you are going to do the same thing to the opposite corners. Remember to finger press away from the center block, then trim to ¼".

Repeat this process with the light 6½" square. Once you have completed the squares, lay out your pattern as follows:

Be careful when you press your seams together. Make sure they go in opposite directions so you don't have to sew over a huge lump of fabric. Don't forget to square your finished block to measure 12½".

As always, there are many variations that can be made with this block. Don't forget to continue to experiment.

Next month, we'll take a break from triangles and look at another way to make some magic with rectangles. Until then...happy quilting.
